Have you ever been in a Seed Spittin’ Contest?
July 30, 2015
We reported that the Tyler Pipe team in Tyler, Texas celebrated the end of summer with a watermelon party, but they’re not the only ones that have nice cold watermelons. Tyler Pipe & Coupling in Marshfield, Missouri also treated team members to a trailer full of delicious sweet watermelons delivered to the plant for everyone to enjoy. Several were cut up and served in the lunchroom and every team member was given a fresh watermelon to take home and enjoy with their family.
Of course, you can’t have Watermelon Day without having a “Seed Spittin’ Contest.” Eighteen team members held a fierce competition on the front sidewalk complete with measured grid lines marked for distance and accuracy.
Jim Sartin (Utility Worker) won the “Spittin’ Contest” with a whopping distance of 32’4”! Jeff Morris (Environmental Manager) came in 2nd as he once again narrowly edged out Alicia Hardacre (Safety Manager) by a half inch with a distance of 27’ 2 ½. Alan Dickerson (Coupling Lead Person) and Morris Moore (Production Operator A) tied for 4th Place at 26’ 8”. Alan Dickerson probably would have won the contest except for the fact that his watermelon seed “plinked” against a car parked next to the sidewalk and ended the forward motion. Karen Shinnebarger (Human Resources Manager) came in at a very disappointing last place at 6’6” and Bill Hoffman (Plant Manager) was sadly disqualified due to the fact that his watermelon seed ended up off the main course into the grass somewhere and never to be found.
The contestants gathered for a group photo at the front of the plant and this year’s winners received gift cards and trophies. Everyone that participated received a participant medallion.
Congratulations to the winners of this year’s Seed Spittin Contest.
