TECH TIP #19
O - RING LUBRICANTS
For many years Amerex has been recommending
and offering Visilox V-728 for sale as a preferred o-ring
lubricant. It worked well for us in the factory, particularly
on halon extinguishers and apparently from the number of
5 ounce tubes sold, it is working well for you in the field.
The decision to use the silicon type lubricant was based
upon o-ring and chemical agent supplier advice as well as
a good deal of experimentation in our R & D lab.
The V-728 was a proprietary blend created
for Amerex but our supplier has placed such large volume
order requirements on us we would have had to stock a multi
year supply. We did some more R & D and found that Visilox
V-711 has all of the same lubrication and protection qualities
and is readily available.
As of May 1, Amerex is stocking Visilox
V-711. It is available in the same 5 ounce tubes and at
the same price as currently listed in the Amerex Parts Price
List dated Feb. 1, 1997.
Amerex lab and floor manufacturing
test perameters - Lubricants must satisfy the following:
1. Be satisfactory for use @ - 65°
to + 170° F.
2. Be reasonably resistant to dilution
by Halon 1211.
3. Be reasonably easy to apply.
4. Inhibit corrosion of lubricant coated
metals.
5. Be compatible (not degrade) o-rings
and seals.
6. Be economical in price considering
the application.
7. Come in a convenient package or dispenser.
Test results:
Visilox 711 performed satisfactorily
in all of our tests. The appearance is white translucent.
Stated temperature range - 40° to + 400° F. (no
problem in our -65° F. tests). Visilox 711 is a water
repellant, chemically inactive compound. It is a noncorrosive
and radiation resistant good lubricant for plastic and rubber
parts such as o-rings.
