TECH
TIP #22 DRY CHEMICAL TOXICITY HISTORY:
Amerex
Corporation has produced dry chemical agents since 1973, both for installation
in new fire extinguishers and various sizes of packaged recharges. In those 24
years, there has not been a reported incident of chemical toxicity in chemical
production, fire extinguisher manufacturing, testing or training. Because the
various dry chemicals are composed of very finely divided particles, occasionally
airborne dust is present in some operations. As in the case of any nuisance dust,
the use of a dust mask is recommended (but not mandated) to avoid any possible
allergic reaction. Dry chemicals do not break down into toxic materials even when
applied to a fire; however, the by-products of combustion (the emissions from
the burning material) can be harmful and should be avoided.
MSDS INFORMATION: ABC Dry Chemical: The
base ingredients in this chemical are mono ammonium phosphate and ammonium sulfate.
Neither these base chemicals nor the moisture resistancy and flowing additives
blended in the production operation will be toxic to humans upon discharge or
application to a fire. REGULAR Dry Chemical:
The base ingredient in this chemical is sodium bicarbonate. Neither this base
chemical nor the moisture resistancy and flowing additives blended in the production
operation will be toxic to humans upon discharge or application to a fire.
PURPLE K Dry Chemical: The base ingredients in
this chemical are potassium bicarbonate and calcium carbonate. Neither these base
chemicals nor the moisture resistancy and flowing additives blended in the production
operation will be toxic to humans upon discharge or application to a fire.
AMEREX MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS: All
Amerex MSDS have been sent to every Distributor. Two versions for all chemicals
shipped by Amerex are available on our Web Page, the long form required by several
states as well as an abbreviated two page version acceptable in most states. These
